As George Bernard Shaw once said, “progress is impossible without change” and though change is sometimes uncomfortable, it is necessary.  For almost three years I have been involved in the bed bug outreach program here at DMSMCA and I believe that the program has made a significant difference in the quality of life in both our immediate community and around the city.  With that being said, I think that there is room to have an even greater impact on the struggle against bed bugs.

As of right now, we are shifting how we service our community.  For many years our bed bug program has focused on education, advocacy and the distribution of low cost remediation materials, particularly mattress covers.  Though our focus will remain the same, we will no longer be distributing mattress covers in the community.

There is unfortunately no quick and easy fix for bed bugs, fighting a bed bug infestation takes time and effort.  By themselves, mattress covers can be compared to putting a band aid on a deep cut.  It may stop the bleeding for a moment but it is not the right tool for the job.  Mattress covers may give you comfort for a night or two but they do not deter bed bugs in any way.  While you can fight a bed bug infestation without mattress covers, you cannot effectively get rid of bed bugs without a bed frame.  Unfortunately there are many people in our community who are unable to acquire bed frames due to monetary constraints and are stuck in an endless battle with bed bugs that they may never get rid of.

Our goal is to help people to permanently rid their homes of bed bugs, so we have decided to invest in bed frames that we can sell to community members at a very reasonable price.  They are available in twin, double and queen sizes and are easy to assemble.  Along with bed frames, we also distribute bed leg defenders that will prevent bed bugs from getting onto your bed, leaving you to sleep in peace.

Bed bugs can be eradicated.  A decent bed frame, bed leg defenders and a little elbow grease (vacuuming and steaming) are the first and most important steps to living without bed bugs.  I am more than happy to assist you with a plan of action and can supply you with the tools required for success.  If you have any further questions or comments please feel free to contact me at bedbug.prevention@dmsmca.ca or at 204-774-7005 ext109.
